Android Oct 2009

Where is Android? It was born just over a year ago. In the tech world, that’s decades ago. It was just a newborn at 1.0 and a toddler at 1.5, maybe losing training wheels at 1.6. So at 2.0, where is Android? We’ve seen some great improvements, and reports are 2.0 is a huge leap forward. It seems that no matter where you turn, no matter what review you read there are always comparisons to the iPhone. Even in this article. So, is it as good as the iPhone’s OS? Simple answer. No. Long answer? Continue Reading.

With the introduction of Motorola’s Droid, I think a phone with the right amount of hardware to compete has been introduced with an Android OS, but it’s still not as slick enough for a standard user. Keep it simple. The geek in me knows the Droid’s hardware is excellent, but the designer in my thinks the myTouch 3G is still one of the better looking Android phones out there. Of course, the Sony Ericsson X3 is pretty dang sexy from the teaser video, but until we get real production photos and reviews of the phone, it cannot be counted. The Droid, to me, feels like a Windows PC. Functionally excellent with all the right hardware at the right prices, but not sexy or simple.

I feel the same way about the OS so far. It’s not simple and sexy, but functional, with lots of options and customization. But, that’s the biggest attraction to me at least. However, I’m fairly sure I don’t represent the average phone user.  As such, I understand the appeal of the iPhone.  For instance, I know I would be perfectly happy with an iPhone, even if I were constantly yearning to tinker with it.  But, I’ve decided on an Android phone because I am a tinkerer.  I like to try new ROMs and different settings.  However, I know this OS is heading in the right direction.  It’s been made more capable for the business users, includes new features for the social networking crowd, and the phone manufacturers are starting to embrace it.  In one year, I should return to this post and see if I still agree with it.  Who knows what the future might hold.

These are just my opinions, feel free to disagree, agree or just ignor me altogether.

I know how you feel. I’ve had an iPhone for 2 years now. I had the original, got the 3G the second day it was out, and recently got my 3G replaced due to the 3.1 freeze-up issue.

I love my iPhone but I’m craving the Droid, or at least the Hero. I’ve outgrown the virtual keyboard on the iPhone (I fly on that thing but the mistakes (on the part of the keyboard) have become overwhelming).

I like what the Droid promises: a full-QWERTY when you want speed, and a passable portrait virtual ‘board when you want to one-hand-tap. I like the idea of it replacing my GPS with nothing more than a $30 dock. I like the thought of it being a desktop media center (I currently use an old hacked iPod mini for this purpose). I like the thought of its being made by Motorola, which hearkens the great build quality of my V3, Z3, and V3xx. I like the screen size and resolution.

    But . . . .

    I like Sense UI.

I like the thought of “what’s next” (*cough*snapdragon*cough*).

Basically, I want Droid2. I want the 1GHz, Moto-built, future-proof Droid. I want the one that’s not going to lag on Android 2.5, which can’t be far off. I want the one with Motoblur built in.

    Basically I want it all.
