Many people are wondering why there is no “multitouch” on the Verizon Droid. After all, it is in Android 2.0. The support API is there, so why not implement it. One reason: Apple? It seems that perhaps Motorola and Verizon don’t want to get into trouble with Apple over a multitouch patent. So, while there is no pinch-zoom in the browser, Verizon’s Droid does support multitouch in games and other apps that developers put out there. Well, apparently Europe isn’t as afraid of Apple as the US is, so they’ve gone ahead and added multitouch pinch and zoom to their phones, though they won’t be getting Google Maps, but instead get Motonav GPS turn-by-turn navigation.
Since it’s in Android 2.0 and the GSM version has it, I see just a short wait until someone has a home cooked Droid ROM with pinch and zoom style multitouch support.
