Sony has come clean this morning, finally unveiling their much rumored and videoed XPERIA X10. For those that don’t remember, this was once called the X3 or possibly even the Infinity. Well, here it is, in all it’s press shots glory. It comes with a 1Ghz Snapdragon cpu from Qualcom, none of that 768Mhz whimpyness we read about yesterday in Acer’s Liquid. It has a whooping 4″ wide 480×854 WVGA capacitive touchscreen to show you that really slick looking Rachael interface we’ve seen floating around. Though they are now calling it UX, for User eXperience. I think that makes a little more sense, because people don’t want other people in their cell phone. It’s running on top of Android 1.6 Donut. In back there is an 8.1″ MP cam with LED flash, and once again, let me just say with my past experience with SE camera’s on phones, I’m really interested to see how this one works out.

Sony Ericsson choose to add it’s own zing to the Android base OS, with what they are calling UX. They add three main new features on top of the fancy UI change. The first two are similar in their function, gathering and organizing your life. Let’s start with what they call Timescape. It aggregates all your social updates into one place, very similar to MOTOBLUR, including missed calls, texts, tweets and Facebook updates. It’s user controllable so you can filter the results, and I’m sure turn things on and off as it might become overwhelming. The second organizing feature is for your media, called Mediascape. It basically keeps your music, photos and video available to you, both what’s on the phone and online. It makes suggestions, much like iTunes genius feature. The last major change is facial recognition in photos. So, if you tag someone the first time, each time you take their pic or browse through your files they are there, and here is the kicker, it lets you call them by simply tapping their mug on your screen. Nice feature, but not sure if it’s extremely useful.
Apparently a few reviews got an early hands on and they report that the browsing experience is awesome, with some very fast load times and smooth scrolling. This is good news indeed. They go on to state Google maps is very nice as well, but take note, this is coming with Android 1.6, so the excellent looking Google navigation app is not included. In the press release there is mention of something called Wisepilot in a free trial version format and not available in all markets, which makes me have a sad face. I hope SE can quickly get 2.0 on there with some Google Navigation for us US folks. Maybe?
One last big news is the networks supported:
UMTS HSPA 900/1700/2100
GSM GRPS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900
UMTS HSPA 800/1900/2100
GSM GRPS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900
This means it’s all set for all the different markets I can think of, including the US with T-Mobile and AT&T.
Look for this to hit the street in Q1 of 2010 in black and white.
