Well, that didn’t take too terrible long. The great minds over at XDA Developers have rooted the CDMA Sprint version of the HTC Hero and one custom ROM has already been created for you. It was done with an exploit and there are already YouTube videos of it and everything. So, for those looking to get experimental with their Android, head on over to the links provided and have fun. Be sure and report back your experience for other on These are the Droids.
UPDATE: XDA is down as of this posting, but as soon as it’s back I will update the post with the link to the forum.
UPDATE 2: XDA forums are back. Link is working.

Just a suggestion, but if you’re going to publish these vids, BUY A TRIPOD.

Good suggestion. This isn’t my video. You can leave the response to the guy who posted the youtube video in the first place. Maybe he’ll try that next time. I also felt the first minute or so was completely useless. I think people should rehearse a little or at least have some sort of game plan.

LOL, the ones I can’t stand are the ones where there’s no talking, but you can hear the camera person breathing. It’s like watching a serial killer unboxing. I’m always afraid something terrible’s about to happen at the end of the video.

@ Ryan, I’m sure someone will find a way to root the Droid soon. I’m a minimalist myself and like the idea of a clean and simple Android OS install. But, I’m not sure, maybe Sense UI on the Droid would be sweet. Let’s hope people continue being creative and building fast/better ROMs.

@ B00sted, You can find a number of widgets available on the market that do similar things. However, to answer your question, yes probably. I have seen a number of ROMs that port the Sense UI interface onto a myTouch 3G, others that just take a few of the customness and move it over, such as the keyboard and widgets. I have even seen a Motoblur ROM for the myTouch 3G / G1 already. See [http://db.androidspin.com/android_developer_display.asp?developerid=8] I will just state that flashing a custom ROM is done at your own risk and no one on thesearethedroids.com assumes responsibility. Just in case you mess it up.

@Bender, thanks for the quick reply! honestly everything around me is hacked in some form from my iPod touch to my wii, so that is no issues for me just didn’t know what can be done where. I have done a bit of app/widgets to get what I can out of the phone atm but I really want a bottom dock for phone and such and it just does not exist or i suck at searching lol

This is cool; I wonder how hard it's gonna be for people to root the Droid. Motorola's have been notorliously exploited in the past. I used to run a German ROM with language packs, skins, and custom programs on my Z3 rizr, and a De-AT&T'd firmware on my V3xx. I'd love to see Sense on the Droid, because playing with the Eris and the Droid, the Eris felt more finished, but the droid was obviously superior.
