Droid OTA Update

droid_OTAA number of online forums have been abuzz this morning about an OTA update which is being pushed as I type for the Motorola Droid.  Verizon even released a software update white paper outlining the changes that come with Android 2.01.  Reports are the update is fairly small in size and just takes a few minutes to perform, so if you are a Droid user, keep checking your update status.  Click for the changes

Users are reporting a number of little changes including:

New unlock sliders. New unlock screen. Better camera. Black widgets. Internet seems faster. – Spbeyond

  • Enhancements for three-way calling.

  • When receiving a call on call waiting, the speakerphone now remains on.
  • Bluetooth® functionality is improved; background echo is eliminated.
  • Improved Bluetooth phone book transfer of contacts to in-vehicle Bluetooth solutions.
  • After closing a GPS application, the GPS icon will now automatically be removed from the notification panel.
  • Users can now receive SMS and MMS messages after an EMS message is received.
  • SMS and MMS may now be sent to seven-digit addresses.

Also, we knew this update was coming, and it was reported to be coming within a few weeks, but this is much faster than I anticipated. The Android 2.0.1 SDK just came out 3 Dec 2009, 4 days ago. Of course, Motorola and/or Verizon may have gotten the 2.0.1 before it was announced on the Android Developers Blog, but still that’s a fast turn around and one more reason I am more and more leaning towards a vanilla Android over custom Androids (Sense UI etc) because the updates can come out so much faster.

That is a very fast update. Let's hope other carriers follow suit.
