Archos 5 IT
I was in a local electronics store the other day and had a chance for a little Archos 5 Internet Tablet hands on time. The Archos 5 IT is a 4.8″ 800×480 screen carrying PMP, with built in hard drive from 160GB to 500GB and a micro SD card slot. It had Android 1.5 as it’s base OS and that is powered by a ARM CortexTM-A8 core running at 800 MHz. While I wasn’t able to take an extended test of the PMP, my initial thoughts were surprising to me.
It wasn’t exactly the best looking PMP I’ve ever seen, but it wasn’t particularly ugly either. The thing that surprised me the most was it’s speed. It seemed to handle switching apps, loading apps and general menu access and usage very well. It was much faster than I have felt on any Android phone I’ve used so far, which includes, myTouch 3G, Sprint Hero, Samsung Moment, Droid, Droid Eris. The Droid was the only thing that could even compete with pure speed. That’s about all I can report at this time, I recommend going in to a local store and try it out yourself.
