Well, despite the report I posted on about the possibility of having the Nexus One out on Jan 1st, it might be more like Jan 5th. Yeah, that countdown is very likely just for the new year, but it’s still fun to imagine. Maybe a Nexus One will burst forth from your computer screen on Jan 1st and into your lap? Tell me it’s possible Google. Anyway, now Reuters is stating it’s possibly going to be out with T-Mobile on Jan 5th. They state that there will be a couple versions, one sold direct through Google, unlocked, and one on contract with T-Mobile.They go on to state that the direct Nexus One from Google could be out as early as Jan. 5th. This setup sounds a little familiar. I can purchase a myTouch 3G on contract at a subsidized price through T-Mobile. I can purchase the same phone, direct from Google, unlocked via my $25 developer account. This isn’t really new or industry shaking.
Baird Research analyst Will Power said: “We expect the launch of a new competitive device to be directionally negative for most of the existing smart phone markers, including Apple, Research in Motion, Nokia Oyg, HTC, Motorola Inc, Palm Inc, Samsung and others, while perhaps most negative for the existing Android partners.”
Again, some people are still thinking this is a horrible move, but unless Google does something crazy such as a free phone or $99 unlocked not on contract, this isn’t really new and shouldn’t affect how the market runs, as I’ve pointed to before.
