Google can finally take the “coming soon” placeholder down from their desktop dock. Today users are able to purchase the good looking desktop dock for their much loved Nexus One. At least for the users who haven’t thrown their N1 out because of 3G issues. The desktop dock is a nice cradle that will hold your N1 upright and allow for charging as well as audio output to your audio gear via bluetooth. It will also start up the clock application automatically. But, it will not transmit data when plugged in, so don’t expect to be able to attach the dock your your PC.
Google outlines some of the benefits the $45 accessory will net you:
The Nexus One Desktop Dock is an elegant place to charge your phone, on your desk or nightstand.
Just drop your phone in the Desktop Dock, and the Clock app launches automatically, making it easy to:
- Check the local time and weather
- Set and clear alarms
- Watch a slideshow of your photos
- Play music
- Dim your phone’s display for nighttime use
We also include a 3.5mm-to-RCA audio cable that allows you to connect the dock to your stereo, so you can listen to your phone’s music on your stereo system.

Utilizing the bluetooth to play music via the dock allows the user the ability to listen to music without having to have the phone physically in the dock. If you want to check your email or latest tweets, you can do that without losing your nice amplified music via your home stereo. If you are listening to music, it will pause temporarily while you take your call too, which can be nice.
Also, by the look of it, don’t expect to utilize this if you have any sort of case on your N1. Hopefully, you purchased that easily removable cover to protect your investment.
Head over to the Google Nexus One phone page, click “Get Your Phone” and scroll down to accessories. Maybe Google will remove the “Coming Soon” placeholder for the car dock soon too.
UPDATE: Nexus One user guide for car home no longer lists the Car Dock as “Coming Soon”. Now it points the user to the purchase section of the Google Phone page.
Car Home is designed to work with the optional Nexus One car dock accessory (available from google.com/phone), though you don’t have to own a dock to use it.
