Motorola Droid with Android 2.1 Testing at Verizon

Looks like Motorola Droid owners can start salivating now. Apparently, Android 2.1 version 1 is making its way through the testing department at Verizon making sure that ever nook and cranny is checked for bugs before a public release. This version and Android 2.1 brings with it pinch-to-zoom Browsing, but no word on a multitouch Gallery as of yet. According to a trusted source over at Engadget, while this does report as Android 2.1, it’s lacking just a bit of the Nexus One features.
According to that source, here is what Droid users can expect when the update hits:
- It’s based on Android 2.1. The build currently being circulated is identified as 2.1 version 1, mirroring the update just pushed to the Nexus One last week.
- Google Goggles comers pre-installed.
- The browser’s now multitouch enabled, just like Google Maps 3.4.
- Interestingly, the home screen’s still got the same look as 2.0.1, meaning it doesn’t adopt the Nexus One’s rotating 3D grid of app icons — it’s still got the pull-up drawer tab at the bottom.
- No active wallpapers.
- The news and weather widgets introduced on the Nexus One are included.
Well, that’s good and bad. I’m sure many users will be very happy with the MT browser, but Droid users can get that now with the Dolphin Browser and experience gesture browsing and faster speeds without an Android 2.1 update.

I think we can simply chalk this up to the Droid’s less powerful hardware. I always saw the N1 wallpapers as a technology demo than an actual feature. While it’s cool that the N1 is capable of such a processing-heavy feature, I’m sure a lot of people would choose to turn that off to save battery/processor.
