Why I Choose an Android Phone Over the Competition

I choose an Android phone because it reflects who I am.  The Android OS is an open source mobile operating system built by a community of developers and is fully capable of being hacked, tweaked and customized in ways that are only limited to the imagination of us humans.  I want a mobile phone that will conform to me and not the other way around.  The manufacturers have realized this too.  Just look at the number of added customization being done by the manufacturers, Sense UI, Sony Ericsson User Experience, MOTOBLUR, and TouchWiz.  This allows for a unique experience for each person and the selection allows the user to purchase the phone that is just right for them.

Android as an Adolescent

Yes, it’s a young OS at around 14 months old.  It’s growing quickly and becoming more stable and feature rich with each iteration.  I feel in the next year or so we’ll really see Android mature with the inclusion of corporate features, more stability and a very solid foundation.  Android 2.1 was a big step forward and helps to create an experience that I feel surpassed some of it’s competition.  Once older devices are updated to the new OS it should really help boost Android’s reputation as a serious competitor.  Understanding the initial faults of Android helps to build a better product in the end.  I think Google learned from the early stages and is really starting to refine the OS.

An Army of Droids

It seems like not a day goes by that rumors or leaked photos of an upcoming Android phone don’t spring into existence.  This wide array of Android devices, from the simple and inexpensive phones, to the DROIDS and Nexus Ones, help build a community of phone users who can all relate to each other.  Developers can reach multiple markets with a single platform and everyone can choose the device of their liking.  Sure, no single device may drive the whole market, but it doesn’t have to.  Instead of relying on one device for all your users, you can count on dozens of devices to get things just right.

Future of Android

The first few iterations of Android OS came out very quickly and jumped from 1.0 to 1.1, 1.5, 1.6, 2.0 and now 2.1 all within that 14 months of life.  Just like humans, the first few years we grow quickly, learn from our mistakes and build the foundation of our life, Android has been really forging ahead at full steam.  However, it has reached a point that it’s starting to mature and really become what it should be.  It will continue to grow, no doubt, we already know the nickname of it’s next release, Froyo (frozen yogurt), but we can expect it to continue to improve because of the innovation of Android developers, manufactures and Google.  I’m not saying the competition won’t grow, I hope they do and I hope they bring their own innovation to the mobile phone table to keep the competition continuing.  I feel Android is here to stay for a while and it should only get better with age.
