XPERIA X10 Android Updatable

Sony Ericsson’s XPERIA X10 has been in works for many months now.  Rumors of it’s release are getting hotter and hotter.  It’s been a while since SE first started to show off it’s Android phone and since then, Android OS has changed, updated and moved on.  The XPERIA X10 comes with a custom user experience on top of it’s Android 1.6 base OS known as the “Sony Ericsson User Experience platform.”  The SEUE includes unique interfaces such as Timescape for keeping all your social dealings in order, as well as Mediascape for organizing your media in a fashionable way.  However, many people are starting to ask SE what about the base OS?  Will it be updated.  The short answer, yes.  For the longer answer

In the SE Product Blog, Sumit Malhotra, dives into this subject head first.  He explains that many people are initially wowed by the X10’s physical design and feel.  Then they start asking about the software, the Android OS.  He explains how they built the SEUE and how it creates an experience for the user that is still ahead of it’s time and he feels that it’s very competitive with Android 2.1 devices as it stands now.

I am both confident and humble at the same time as we can´t anticipate and cover everything when planning ahead. There will be areas that we can´t over bridge between these releases, but on the total experience I am very confident about this product as the feedback received has been extremely positive. Then there will be an update as well, which I hope settles some of the concernes expressed.

That is probably the most information paragraph of the post.  He doesn’t state directly which OS version will have an update, or if the update will even be to the base OS.  It could be an update to the SEUE itself.  However, due to the recent inclusion of multitouch pinch-to-zoom of the Maps, Gallery and Browser for Android 2.0+ devices, it would seem strange if the X10 didn’t get a bump to Android 2.0 at least to take advantage of the multitouch in the OS.

I think they should allow you to use straight, bog-standard Android 2.1 on it. Then people could have the choice of using the pretty (if outdated) SEUE, or the newest features (Google Maps Nav etc).

Honestly, they should have known from the speed with which 1.6 followed 1.5 that updates would be coming quickly. So when they began making these heavy customizations, it would have been worth the effort to design them in such a way that porting them is easier.

Ryan:
From what I’ve seen it is not possible to downgrade the version of the OS on an Android handset.
