The only thing that exists so far for the HTC Scorpion that we know of, is a couple leaked build files that supposedly are real. They were sent to Androidspin and passed on to us, with some doubt in tact. The build files refer to the HTC Scorpion as haven’t a 1.5Ghz Qualcomm QSD8672, Android 2.2 – being reported as Froyo, and WiMax as the cherry on top. If this phone does exist at this time, those are some nice specs. Notice I placed the term “Dream Phone” in the title. This doesn’t necessarily mean I think it’s everyone’s dream phone, I mean it could just be someone’s imagination and not really exist. So, what exactly does that mean?
Well, let’s first look at the Qualcomm QSD8672. The 8672 is a chipset that features the following specs:
- Dual CPUs, up to 1.5 GHz for faster response and processing
- Low-power 45nm process technology for higher integration and performance
- Higher-resolution WSXGA (1440 x 900) display support
- High-definition (1080p) video recording and playback
- Support for HSPA+ networks – 28 Mbps downloads and 11 Mbps uploads
- Supports CDMA2000 1X, 1xEV-DO Rel 0/A/B networks
- Improved 3D graphics – up to 80M triangles/sec and 500M+ 3D pixels/sec
- Integrated 3G mobile broadband
- Support for Wi-Fi® and Bluetooth® connectivity
- Built-in seventh-generation gpsOne® engine with Standalone-GPS and Assisted-GPS modes
- 12-megapixel camera support
- Multiple audio codecs: (AAC+, eAAC+, AMR, FR, EFR, HR, WB-AMR, G.729a, G.711, AAC stereo encode)
- Support for mobile broadcast TV (MediaFLO™, DVB-H and ISDB-T)
- Support for Windows Mobile®, Android, and a number of Linux®-based operating systems
- Qualcomm’s hybrid mode alternative solution
Riding along side this, the build property files mention the device will be a mdpi device, which to me sounds a little iffy. Mpdi refers to medium pixel density in the Android OS, which would be a device with one of the following three screens; 480×320 3.0″-3.5″ diagonal, 480×800 4.8″-5.5″ diagonal or 480×854 5.0″-5.8″ diagonal. For those wondering the Nexus One and Droid fall in the hdpi (high density). So, this would mean one of two things: either the screen of the scorpion is huge (minimum size of about 4.8″), or it’s not high resolution like the N1 and Droid. OR it could also mean there is an error in the build file or it’s a fake file. Read it as you will.
I can’t really report on Android 2.2 as there is no information available at this time. I don’t know if it would necessarily be Froyo, or just an updated Eclair (which covers both 2.0 and 2.1 so why not 2.2). And there is no information on if 2.2 is definitely the next release.
If the Scorpion did indeed include WiMax as suggested, then it could very likely be going to the Sprint network as at this time, it’s the only US carrier that has any real WiMAX (4G) coverage in the US. This would be a brother to the already leaked Supersonic, which reportedly also comes with WiMax and is headed for Sprint.
