Motorola Droid for AT&T with 3G – $600CAD and Work

All you fans of AT&T who have been waiting patiently for your very own Android phone that fully supports AT&T’s network, 3G included, don’t have to wait any longer.  As we previously mentioned the Motorola Milestone, known as the DROID here in the US on Verizon’s network, has all the GSM support you need for full 3G speeds on AT&T’s network.  It’s officially for Telus’ network up north in Canada, but with an unsubsidized version, running you $600CAD, a quick unlock and your own AT&T sim card, you can be enjoying some Droid fun soon.

Utilizing a quick currency converter that runs around $575 as of this posting, and what more, you can get a free car dock for the Milestone.  I just checked and Telus cannot ship outside of Canada, so maybe makes some friends and have them ship it to you, if you can trust them to not keep the Android for themselves.  Or, as the photo above suggests, take a flight to Canada and pick it up yourself.  You’ll still have to unlock it, which should be an easy task, and then simply slip in your favorite AT&T sim card.  Good to go.

Be Careful AT&T buyers! Be aware of some limitations of the Milestone that the Droid doesn’t have.
I have THREE points to make 1 good, 2 BAD
First the good. Their is no TELUS brand on the phone anywhere! Not on the “chin” (like Verizon’s Droid) or on the back. Suprising really.
    Now the BAD.
    1) The bootloader is most likely digitally signed, since it is running 2.0.1 OS. This means NO CUSTOM ROMS!
    2) VERY IMPORTANT for travellers! The phone tech specs show it only has 850/1900 GSM and HSPA. That means travelling to Europe, not only will you NOT HAVE 3G, but not even 2G EDGE(900mhz there) or even a phone. Just a big paperweight looking for wifi!!
With even the cheapest GSM based phones having 850/900/1800/1900, Telus just SCREWED anyone who wants to get on to ANY OTHER NETWORK. There should be legislation that the North American GSM carriers MUST enable 850/1900/2100 HSPA and 850/900/1800/1900 GSM. Sorry T-Mobile can include 1700 in that legislation as well.
