Opera Mini 5 Makes it to Android
Opera announced the availability of Opera Mini 5 Beta for the Android OS today. This brings Opera’s cost-efficient mobile browser to the Android OS and allows for very fast web page loads with less data than typical browsers. The Opera Mini suite utilizes a go-through server to convert full web pages into compressed versions quickly and sends them to your phone, allowing for up to 90% less data requirements and resulting in faster web page loads.
There are a few draw backs though, as quite often interaction with the web site is lost through this conversion. Things such as javascript based menus and such are not transferred, but for items such as reading the New York Times full web page, I found the load times extremely fast, even on my limited data connection at my current location.

Tabbed Browsing on Opera Mini 5
Along with the very fast page load times, Opera Mini 5 comes with built in tabbed browsing, a must in today’s browser market, a speed dial start page with 9 of your most visited/favorite websites, bookmarks and speed dial syncing between your desktop Opera browser and your mobile mini 5 browser and a download manager as well as a password manager too.

Speed Dial on Opera Mini 5
I wouldn’t suggest the Mini 5 as a replacement, but it makes a great supplement to the default Android browser. It makes for very fast load times and minimizes data requirements and is great if you are out in 2G land and need a quick page load to look up something. You can find the Opera Mini 5 Beta in the Android Market, give it a try and see what you think.
