Motorola and Verizon are starting to finally push out that much rumored Android 2.1 update that over 1 million Android users have been clamoring for. The Android 2.1 update includes a number of new features that bring the DROID’s ROM up to date with that found in the Nexus One, including live wallpapers, voice-to-text entry and updated 3D galleries, maps and browsers. This is great news for Android lovers, as the DROID is easily the most used Android out there.
The update has been detailed by AndroidCentral, but withouta reference to a source, so I’m not 100% sure how accurate this is. Anyway, here is the latest word on exactly how this will play out:
- The first batch of 1,000 updates will be pushed out at 9 a.m. PDT.
- Assuming all goes well, another 9,000 updates will go out at 8:59 p.m. PDT.
- After that, there’s a 24-hour waiting period (to make sure all’s still well.)
- Then 200,000 updates will go out on Saturday, March 20.
- Another batch of 200,000 goes out after that, until everyone has the update.
Seems like a logical way to push out an update. You’d hate to kill all 1 million plus DROID in one evening.
I imagine that after the first 200,000 update push, the rest will come relatively quickly and is only staggered to help reduce network drain pushing probably around 90MB per phone OTA.
