In my opinion the only differences are:
1. the App Market (+iPhone)
2. the price (+Android)
the rest you can "fix" with wigets,...

Apple products were really innovative the last years, but now its kind of the same as Android,... so they have to be creative again, or they gonna fail because of the price difference (because it's kind'a huge!)

Android vs iPhone: Top 5 Reasons Android is Better Than iPhone
Its open source: Multiple app stores, no developer restrictions on apps (however you should be careful as to what you download and from which source).
Real multitasking: There is no control as to which apps can and cannot multitask (however there are chances of conflict between apps as the video points out).more at http://www.mobile10.org/?page_id=532
Runs Flash: As more platforms begin to adopt Flash (BlackBerry OS, QNX, webOS), iOS still remains as the one platform that can’t play Flash videos, websites and games.

Choice of handsets: Who doesn’t love choice. While Android is a great platform, some users may prefer to pay for a device with a better camera, QWERTY keypad or larger screen. Or they just may want an entry-level phone with the ability to make calls and surf the Web.

I have the Samsung Moment and has the Google Voice App. Not sure if IPhone has it, but theoretically, if someone had Google Voice installed on both phones, why couldn't they \chat\ for free?

Ignoring the iPhone 4 launch, last month Opera announced that Apple approved a mobile version of the Opera web browser for iPhone, and it's gotten a bunch of very nice reviews in the press. According to Opera, there have been several million Opera mini for iPhone downloads.
