Android Updates – Evo 4G, XPERIA X10, Fennec

Android has definitely been growing over the last few months.  Just do a quick Google search and you are bombarded with Android news.  Let’s cover a few items that we aren’t covering in specific posts.  What’s happening in Android today.
First, Sony Ericsson’s Rikard Skogberg has stated that the XPERIA X10 will not have multitouch, and it’s not just a software issue, it’s hardware so it can’t just be fixed via OTA updates. This will limit the UI to utilizing conventional methods of zooming and performing certain tasks. This makes the XPERIA even less of the powerhouse it once was considered to be.  Even though SE stated the X10 would eventually see Android 2.1, but the time all this is worked out and the X10 is actually in US customers’ hands, it might be too little too late.

Sprint has released the developers guide for the Evo 4G, so that developers can take advantage of the sweet features found in the phone.  Mainly, it covers 4G connectivity, the HDMI port and outputting video and finally taking advantage of the front facing camera.  I am going to build a quick teleconferencing app that will display up to four video feeds onto an HDTV for a five-way teleconference over 4G.  Sweet huh?

Finally, Fennec, the mobile version of Firefox Browser has a few early builds that users can download and have a go at.  It’s built for Android 2.0+, specifically the Milestone/Droid.  It’s huge though, at around 41MB installed.  I tried it out and it was a no go on my CDMA Hero with Android 2.1 on board…so your results may vary.
