Let’s see what happened over the weekend in the world of Android. There was some huge buzz about a Google Android party going on, which turned out to be just an annual BBQ party and not the Froyo 2.2 excitement many had speculated. I noticed AndroidCentral even went so far as to remove their original article. However, I have to admit that was a bit exciting there for a while and even my mind started to speculate what it meant.
The Motorola Backflip was rooted, which is the first stage of customizing the ROM of an Android device. This is especially good news for AT&T Android lovers on the Backflip as it has been rough for the phone with some AT&T limitation. Let’s hope some Developers get on that bandwagon and release a ROM at least without all the limitations built in.
The HTC Incredible enjoyed it’s first weekend on the market, and it seems it’s hard to find one in stock. Online orders are backed up towards May 14th already. I had a chance to try one at a local Verizon store and I have to say, I am very impressed with the screen, the touch panel and the speed. The only negative I found during my brief hands-on was that enabling live wallpapers did slow it down. Not terribly, but enough that I could tell a difference. The good surprise was the camera. It was extremely fast, quick to go from nothing to photo in phone.
My source close to Spring states that Froyo (Android 2.2) will be making it’s way to the Nexus One very soon (May 12th maybe), and the Evo 4G will be getting it second. The update to Evo 4G would be OTA. It’s likely the Evo 4G ROM has been finalized already for phones in production and they’ll have to wait until an OTA update to get up to Android 2.2. May 12th is the special event for Sprint, in which it’s about 80% likely the Evo 4G will have a release announcement, so there is a good chance we’ll know by then. If not, May 19th is the first day of Google I/O and there will be lots of Froyo news that week as Google demos some of the upcoming features.
Finally, if a leaked screen shot is any indication, Sprint Moment and Hero owners should be pretty happy this week, as it’s reported that the update is coming this week. However, it’s well know screen shots are really easy to fake, so don’t bet the farm on this one. My money would be on a May 12th announcement during the Sprint event.
