It looks like the official, signed release of the Android 2.1 update for the Sprint HTC Hero might have been leaked ahead of the official release. The file is labeled Hero_C_Sprint_2.27.651.5_R_signed_release. After a few developers looked through it, notably damageless who’s custom ROM I currently have running on my Hero, it appears to be the final release of the Android 2.1 update for the HTC Hero. This could very well be the exact one that Sprint will release to the public soon. It comes in the form of a Windows EXE to update your phone, but is being converted to a custom ROM as it is for direct upgrade via the SD card.
This looks like final in every aspect to me. – Damageless
For all the action follow the XDA thread here.
Please be careful if you want to try this yourself. It’s super early to tell what exactly this is, but it could be it. I’ll try and keep this updated as I find out more.
UPDATE: I loaded this myself onto my HTC Hero. Loads up just fine, appears to be a full on release of Android 2.1 for the HTC Hero. May have issues with paid market apps because Google hasn’t added the latest release keys of the Hero into their database, but for now this seems to be pretty good otherwise.
