Sprint’s support page for the HTC Hero is officially showing the Android 2.1 – Eclair update and states the update is available as of today, 5/19/2010. Follow the link for instructions on installing the update. Note that this is not an over the air update, you have to download it to a Windows based PC and run the installer to update your Hero. Also take note this will reset your phone, clearing out your call history, any contacts on the phone that aren’t saved somewhere, as well as text messages and voice mails. While it should not clear out your memory card, I highly suggest you backup that as well, all your photos and music etc. Finally, I am not 100% sure, but I think this will wipe out your downloaded apps and you will have to re-install them. Any apps you paid for once, you can re-download again, assuming you sign in with the same Google account that you purchased them with. Other than that, enjoy.
One last thing, the update link mentioned in the instructions fails to provide the actual update file, as of 7:00am Pac time, so keep an eye out. I will update when I know it’s live.

UPDATE 2: Apparently the download is not live at the Sprint website as well. It’s the same file/download from either HTC or Sprint, choose whichever one works best for you, as apparently some are having troubles with the HTC site being a little slow.
