Google I/O – Day 2 Keynote Android Details Emerge

Main announcement, Android 2.2 is now official and they are running through the updates and features now.

8:40AM:  Daily Activation Rate of Android Phones is now: 100,000/Day

Stated the previously known data, 2nd largest, behind RIM, in US smart phones.

5X Mobile Google Search over the last two years.

Officially passed 50,000 apps in the market.

8:42AM Going to show 22 demos

Five major areas of development

Android 2.2 Froyo official.

1) Speed – FroYo officially comes with a JIT which is a 2x to 5x speed increase.

2) Enterprise Features – 20 New Features for Enterprise.  MS Exchange Friendly by Default, Auto discovery, Security, Address Book.  New APIs for Device Management, such as remote wipe.

3) Application Backup Data API, to move data with application.

4) Cloud to Device Messaging – Demo, Google Maps Send Directions to Phone (Sends Android Intent), Sent to phone and it opens Navigation directly.

5) Tethering and Portable Hotspot is also Official

6) Updates to Web Browser, 2x – 3x performance enhancements.  New V8 JavaScript enhancement.

APIs for access to hardware through the web browser, such as camera, accelerometers.  Web App, Translate in Google via speak input.

9:00AM Flash 10.1 Beat Public Release Announcement as well and Adobe Air.

9:01AM Android Market enhancements.  Apps to SD Card Save!  Move apps to memory Card.

Update all applications in the Android Market.  Yeah!  Allow automatic updating for all apps.  Also, App bug reporting back to the developers.

OK Beyond Froyo, Browsing apps online, syncing with phone automatically.

9:09AM Search, Purchase and send music straight to your Android Device.

They are looking at an iTunes alternative, no looks more like live streaming from iTunes itself to your phone.

9:11AM – Talking about advertisements now.

9:20AM – Everyone in attendance gets an Evo 4G, but not sure if that means free, or just available to buy now.

9:21AM – Not even close to done yet.
