Evo 4G Day – Let the Sprint 4G Party Begin

Today is the first day the Evo 4G goes on sale.  We’ve seen a number of twitter reports of people standing in line, sometimes 40+ people deep to get their hands on the Evo 4G.  I personally know of at least one person who’s probably going to trade in their Hero for a 4G-ro.  Also, there is already an OTA update floating out to users that fixes a few problems but kills the ability to root.  What else can we say about the Evo 4G?

Looking to void your warranty right away?  Didn’t apply the OTA update yet?  Check out these instructions for rooting your 4G. Evo 4G Root Instructions. Why Root?  There are many reasons, but one of my favorite reasons is the ability to remove those apps that come bundled from Sprint and/or HTC.  things such as Tweet, SprintTV, Sprint Navigation, etc.

Next Up, wanna help expand it’s battery life?  Here are some helpful hints from Techcrunch on the subject.  I personally can’t attest for all of them, but some of the basic items, turning down screen brightness, turning off live wall-papers, etc are very good tips.

Enjoy your Android Evo 4G!

It’s a shame about the HTC and Sprint bloatware that can’t be removed. Even though Sense can be turned off from a launcher perspective, the customization runs deep. The Sprint apps are horrible and mostly worthless.

This software is the exact reason people were skeptical of Android’s “open” promise to begin with. There’s nothing that cell phone carriers hate more than “open’. When you throw HTC’s crap on top of it, it becomes unbearable.

If all of this additional software and service was so amazingly useful to us end users, Sprint and HTC should be able to offer it as an optional add-on. We would then see how much people want it based on its quality alone.

Party? What party?! Trying to buy the phone at the Radioshack in downtown DC has been an utter fiasco. First system overload meant having to either stand around for 3.5 hours to process a sale, or like me, leave and come back later, repeatedly, when they said may sale had been processed only to fall through at the last minute. THEN, once the phone WAS on, the data connection failed. Sprint said it was back up of phones trying to log on for the first time. If I had wanted an iPhone launch experience, I would have gotten an iPhone. I hope AT&T or T-Mobile announce GSM versions (or close thereof) of this phone within the next month so that I can return it. I left Sprint because of their crappy service, and Lord, I got punished for thinking things had changed.

Yeah, it was jammed at the Orland Park, IL store today, which IS a good thing. But being with Sprint for 10+ years, I can say I’ve never had one bad experience, although I do search out “certain” workers at the store.

We played with the phone today and it.is.awesome!

Well it’s no party for me either. I had a very long day at work (7am to 6pm) and when I got home, ate, and missed the closing time of the closest Sprint Store. So I make it out to best buy it was 8:30. I got there and the Best Buy Mobile manager told me that her demo unit had just died. I had called ahead and asked about the demo (my wife really needs to try before she buys), and had talked to her. She tried to find a Micro USB cable to charge and start it for me, and the only one she could find kept shorting out and the phone kept dying. I walked. Pissed, I drove across the street to Radio Shack. “The Shack” closed an hour ago but the lights were still on with employees milling around inside and I could see the friggin phones. So down a mile to the 24hr Super Wal Mart. They only have dummy phones. I really hate Apple, but at least they get the buying experience right.
