Droid X Officially Previewed – June 23rd Announcement

Looks like Verizon is getting ready to take the not so tightly closed wrapping off the Motorola Droid X.  This is the phone sneaking around the last few weeks with blurry shots, then clear shots, side shots, etc.  Well, Verizon has sent out fliers to media groups inviting them to the official unveiling of the next generation of Droid.  Among the presenters will be Verizon of course, Motorola, Google and Adobe.  Wait?  Adobe?!?  This could very well be the first phone with Froyo support beyond the Nexus One.  We’ve been told before that Flash Mobile will require Android 2.2 (Froyo) and as such, if Adobe is making their presence known, it’s most likely to discuss Flash Mobile, which would entail an Android 2.2 base.  Will Android 2.2 be inside Droid X when you purchase it?  We certainly hope so.

Hardware for the Droid X looks fairly impressive if not almost overwhelming.  The phone is a giant beast, bigger yet than the Evo 4G.  The screen is reported to be 4.4″, having the same 854×480 resolution as the original Motorola Droid.  There is no physical keyboard, but the X does come with a multi-touch keyboard as well as a Swype keyboard.  Engadget has the exclusive preview at this point and there is a nice video showing off the multi-touch keyboard in action.  I personally use the Swype keyboard for my text input and found it really is a great way to input large amounts of text.  So, that should be two great methods for on screen input.  Given the size of the screen, on screen input should be even easier.  The test unit is running Android 2.1 with a lite version of Motoblur, said to be not much more than a simple home screen replacement, such as many apps available in the Android market.  If that’s true and Motorola has moved away from Motoblur fat, then it would make for a much easier transition from Android 2.1 to, oh I don’t know, say Android 2.2.

Engadget reports it has a 1Ghz processor in the way of a TI OMAP 3630.  However, I’m not sure if that’d be 1Ghz or 720Mhz.  It it’s a 3630 then it’s 720Mhz, if it’s a 3640 then make that 1Ghz.  Either way, they state it’s very responsive, quick with virtually no lag and accurate finger tracking.  Next to the ARM Cortex A8 processor is 8GB of built in storage.  Around back is an 8MP dual LED flash camera that records in HD video as well.  There is a dedicated camera button but the word is, it’s very difficult to use and actually causes camera shake during photo taking resulting in fuzzy images.  Let’s hope that’s just early built/prototype hardware bugs to be worked out.  It comes with a 1500mAh battery and some built in battery management software to help stretch your battery life.

That’s about it for now.  Look for more news and detailed specs upon the unveiling June 23rd.
