The almost official Nexus S has now landed in it’s very own spot on Google’s phone web space. It seems to be showing off all the features previously rumored. While it’s not available for purchase yet, it looks like it’ll be T-Mobile 3G only. At least for now, who knows if there will be an AT&T 3G friendly in the future. However, it doesn’t support the HSPA+ network that T-Mobile has been so happily advertising lately. It looks like it is a slight variation on the Galaxy S line of phones, with the biggest inclusion being NFC, Near Field Communications, for using the phone as a method of payment by swiping the phone over a NFC reader at your favorite retail store. Other features include Wifi calling, such as the tendency for T-Mobile phones these days. Of course it comes packaged with Android 2.3, which rumors are pointing to an announcement any hour now. Don’t expect to see this on T-Mobile’s shelves either. Most likely it’ll go to consumers via the same channels as the Nexus One, online only. UPDATE: Official word is this will be available online and at Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile stores.
Let’s let Google explain the phone in their terms:
Nexus S is the next generation of Nexus devices co-developed by Google and Samsung. The latest Android platform (Gingerbread) paired with 1 GHz Hummingbird processor and 16GB of memory makes Nexus S one of the fastest phones on the market. It comes pre-installed with the best of Google apps and enabled with new and popular features like true multi-tasking, Wi-Fi hotspot, Internet Callling, NFC support, and full web browsing. With this device, users will also be the first to receive software upgrades and new Google mobile apps as soon as they become available.
This looks like a nice phone and being a “Nexus” family member, we might be able to expect that future OS updates will get pushed to the Nexus S, just like the Nexus One, ahead of the curve. No word yet on price.
