Rumors: Sprint Android Updates Could be Late March
0 Comments | Posted by Benjamin at 9:49 am
Sprint has actually been fairly good about posting updates as to when they think the Android 2.1 updates for the Hero and Moment would be available. First they stated it would be in the first half of 2010, which did leave them a fairly wide window, then they narrowed it down a bit to early second quarter. Now, there is a rumor from AndroidCentral that the dates we can expect are March 22nd for the Hero and March 24th for the Moment. Continue Reading…
There have been a number of reports, rumors, speculations and general talk of Android 2.1 and older generation Android smart phones. The question on everyone’s mind is, “Will my Android get version 2.1?” I have received more than one email about the recent news concerning Android 2.1 and older phones. I didn’t jump on the story, because there wasn’t a confirmation of the updates and I decided instead to give the readers a chance to see what is official and what is rumor/speculation. With the introduction of Android 2.0 and then 2.1 a number of features were introduced that helped push the limit of the smart phone’s power and capabilities. Some of those features, such as live wallpaper and the 3D gallery and app drawer/interface can be vary taxing on the phone’s processor and memory. Can the current gen smart phones keep up? It looks like Verizon Wireless is getting ready to start selling the HTC Incredible as it’s appeared in their inventory system and according to the source BerryScoop, once in the inventory system it is a short wait until officially announced and available. Continue Reading…

Well looky here. Google has finally released a version of Google Earth for the Android OS lovers in us all. Unfortunately, it’s not for all of us. Just those who are running Android 2.1 at this time, which basically limits it to Nexus One users and/or those running custom ROMs with Android 2.1. If you do have 2.1 check your market and enjoy your Google Earth, laugh down at the rest of us stuck on 1.6, 2.0 or worse yet, 1.5 (like me). The ugliness that is fragmentation is starting to seriously affect Android users. Let’s hope Google and the partners in crime are seeing the error of their ways and working for a more unified Android community soon.

Looks like T-Mobile Germany/UK will start selling the Pulse Mini starting April of 2010. The Pulse Mini will come with Android 2.1 running off a Qualcomm MSM7225 processor and displayed on a 2.8″ QVGA (320×240px) screen. It will support triaband GSM/GPRS/EDGE as well as singleband UMTS/HSDPA at 2100 MHz, so it will be a fairly limited phone, as far as networks it will work with. Also, it will have Bluetooth 2.0 and WiFi b/g for your other connectivity options. Around back you’ll find a 3.2MP autofocus camera with flash. There is also an included a 3.5mm headphone jack for you music lovers. The ROM size is said to be 300MB, which I’m not sure if that’s available memory or total. However, you can install your own microSD card for up to an addition 16GB. No word on if it comes with a compass or an accelerometer according to the::unwired. Not too shabby for a lower level Droid, especially with Android 2.1 on board. No word on price in Germany, but in the UK it’s looking to be £99 without contract on pay-as-you go.
With the recent announcement from HTC at the 2010 WMC about their newest creation, the Desire, it has left many consumers wondering which phone would be better for them; the Nexus One or the Desire. Both phones are built by HTC, a company poised to be a big name in Android headsets for a long time, and both phones have very similar hardware. There are a few differences here that we’ll look into, both hardware and software, explain what those differences mean to you and hopefully provide a path forward for making sure you find the Droid that you’ve been looking for. HTC Desire and HTC Legend Videos Show Off Phones

HTC has released a set of very nice promotional / preview videos of the Desire and Legend. The Desire is HTC’s newest flagship phone which supports all the latest features of Android 2.1 and has a newer version of Sense UI built on top of it with some pinch-to-zoom features, a couple new widgets, and some enhancements to take full advantage of Android 2.1. The Legend is a replacement for the very popular HTC Hero phone, featuring the same basic layout, with an updated processor, the same Android 2.1 and Sense UI as the Desire and now an AMOLED screen. Both feature a new optical trackpad in place of the traditional trackballs that have been loaded onto Android phones. UPDATE: Official HTC Sites are up with even more details. Continue Reading…
Acer announced a few phones this week at WMC, some were more impressive than the others, some ran on WinMo and some on Android. The top of their list was the Acer Liquid e, which is pretty much the Acer Liquid of old, with Android 2.1, a.k.a Eclair, on board. Acer loaded up the bone stock Android 2.1 and didn’t really change anything else, including the fact they under clock their Snapdragon to 768Mhz instead of the full 1Ghz other manufacturers are using. This is a move to save some of that precious battery power that seems to be lacking in today’s smart phones, and from the hands on Engadget had, you won’t really miss those other 232Mhz. Sprint has made an announcement via Twitter stating the updates for the HTC Hero and Samsung Moment to Android 2.1 will be coming in early 2nd quarter of 2010, which probably means April 2010. Since their tweet is limited to 140 characters, how convenient, they didn’t get into much detail other than stating they are working through options with HTC and Samsung. I’m not too sure what options there could be, especially for the Samsung Moment which should be a completely vanilla Android build. Maybe they mean, the options of how to upgrade; OTA, in store at Sprint, via online updates etc. Sprint, if that’s the case, just let loose the update for those of us who can install it manually and then work out how to get it to the rest of the users as you can. At least, that’s my opinion.

HTC Hero shows Android 2.1 Sense UI Enhancements
0 Comments | Posted by Benjamin at 10:22 am
HTC has built a custom user interface (UI) to place on top of the stock Android OS that adds a number of additional features and experiences for the consumer. The Sense UI isn’t unique to Android, they do the same thing with Windows mobile platforms. Currently, the HTC Hero, both GSM and CDMA, as well as the Droid Eris have Sense UI running on top of Android 1.5, and HTC has given word that they are indeed working on updating those phones to Android 2.1 and they will still carry Sense UI. It wasn’t known, until recently, what kind of changes to the Sense UI users could expect. Well, there is a nice YouTube video showing some of the changes and it involves some multitouch and looks very promising. Continue Reading…
