There have been a number of reports, rumors, speculations and general talk of Android 2.1 and older generation Android smart phones. The question on everyone’s mind is, “Will my Android get version 2.1?” I have received more than one email about the recent news concerning Android 2.1 and older phones. I didn’t jump on the story, because there wasn’t a confirmation of the updates and I decided instead to give the readers a chance to see what is official and what is rumor/speculation. With the introduction of Android 2.0 and then 2.1 a number of features were introduced that helped push the limit of the smart phone’s power and capabilities. Some of those features, such as live wallpaper and the 3D gallery and app drawer/interface can be vary taxing on the phone’s processor and memory. Can the current gen smart phones keep up? Sprint has made an announcement via Twitter stating the updates for the HTC Hero and Samsung Moment to Android 2.1 will be coming in early 2nd quarter of 2010, which probably means April 2010. Since their tweet is limited to 140 characters, how convenient, they didn’t get into much detail other than stating they are working through options with HTC and Samsung. I’m not too sure what options there could be, especially for the Samsung Moment which should be a completely vanilla Android build. Maybe they mean, the options of how to upgrade; OTA, in store at Sprint, via online updates etc. Sprint, if that’s the case, just let loose the update for those of us who can install it manually and then work out how to get it to the rest of the users as you can. At least, that’s my opinion.
Ever since the launch of the latest myTouch 3G, the Fender Edition, T-Mobile has been promoting the use of DoubleTwist software to sync your myTouch with a desktop application. The Android platform currently lacks an officially syncing application for the desktop, though Windows users of HTC Sense UI powered Android phones have access to HTC Sync. DoubleTwist provides the lost desktop application and has been supporting Android devices for a while and after a recent update, includes access to Amazon’s MP3 for purchasing direct through the syncing application. Double twist has been around for a while, but Continue Reading…
This past weekend I took the opportunity to swing by a couple stores, Sprint and Verizon, to check out their latest Android offerings. I checked out the Droid, Droid Eris, Hero and Moment. Read on for the results of my travels. Continue Reading…
David Owens, a Sprint executive, had a little virtual chat yesterday with customers via Sprint’s web site covering some details on their plans forward with Android, Blackberry and Windows phones. There is some very good news in the reports:
- Google Android OS updates are coming for the HTC Hero and Samsung Moment. While he didn’t specify a version – 1.6 or 2.0 – HTC has previously confirmed that they’re working on an Android 2.0 update for the Hero. Also of note is that he didn’t state how, OTA or via USB cable.
- Combination CDMA/GSM Android phones are also “a possibility but nothing this year.”
- They’re considering an Android phone with a built-in MiFi-type router.
- Android phones will get less expensive “as we see volume across the industry.” This last one is an obvious statement, but still good to hear.
I imagine we’ll see both the Hero and Moment upgraded to 2.0 sooner than later. But, this is all good news for Sprint Android users.

Today is the 23rd of October 2009. It’s been a very active Android month and we’re coming toward the end, but still have a few more weeks of excitement ahead of us. Notably, we’ve seen the announcement and release of several Android powered phones and devices. Sprint has officially been letting Android play on it’s network for almost two weeks now. A few bugs have been reported about the HTC Sprint Hero, such as the Rev A or Rev 0 question, as well as a battery drain issue (which has a fix) and a WiFi TCP issue. However, despite that, it’s received much praise as one of the best Android phones to date. If that’s the case, I’m even more excited about the future as I see Android 2.0 bringing in much needed refinement. Speaking of 2.0, Motorola’s Droid phone is making quite a buzz and not just on the geek powered internet blogs (looks at self), but over many different wavelengths such as TV and mailboxes. It’s already been previewed even, courtesy of BGR. Verizon is a much larger network and has a huge source of potential buyers in it’s pocket. Having the #1, #3 and #4 carriers in the US will really help get Android out there. Last I checked, the Android market was approaching 14,000 apps. Nothing like Apple’s 100,000 app store, but it’s getting bigger and better.
Within the next month, we’ll see three additional phones through T-Mobile, the special edition myTouch 3G with 3.5mm headphone jacks and a larger included microSD card, the Motorola Cliq with MOTOBLUR and finally the Samsung Behold II. We’ll see at least two phones through Verizon, including the Droid. Finally, Sprint will also have their second phone, the Samsung Moment in the wild. This will make no less than 7 Android phones in the US market and officially on carriers by this holiday season. I think I know what a bunch of us Android followers are getting for the holidays.
