And the saga continues (so it may appear).  First, it started with Verizon’s ads talking about AT&T’s 3G map coverage.  Then Luke Wilson (and AT&T) struck back with the anti-Verizon ads.  Meanwhile the Droid Does ads starting getting some attention.  After Apple started seeing some of its market share being pulled away, Steve Jobs started to bad-mouth Android.  And in a hilarious turning point, Google implemented multi-touch into their Nexus One and other Android 2.0+ applications.  Recently, Apple submitted a lawsuit stating patent violations against HTC, which appeared to be more directed at Google and the Android OS than HTC (personally I relate this recent patent lawsuit to Al Gore saying he invented the internet).

T-Mobile looks to be preparing for the release of the Cliq XT as it has appeared in the inventory system sporting a couple of price tags.  One hundred and thirty dollars gets you the Cliq XT on a two year contract with T-Mobile’s Even More plan.  want to pay less per month using their Even More Plus plan?  That will cost you two hundred dollars more which isn’t bad at all considering over the life of a two-year term, you can save some major cash.  Continue Reading…

Motorola is sending out some official statements on the recent Over The Air (OTA) updates sent to T-Mobile Cliq users.  They state the majority of users have experienced a good update with no errors, but there are a few users who are having issues installing the update.  The following statement straight from Motorola should help users determine their best path forward, and it includes instructions on how to un-break your Cliq should you be one of the unlucky few.  Continue Reading…

For those who have not applied the Over the Air (OTA) updated from T-Mobile to the Motorola Cliq, you should probably wait and see what happens over the next few days as it seems the OTA update is causing some major problems with the Cliq.  The reported problems stem from a resetting of the clock to 7PM Dec 31 1969, without the ability to set the time back to real time.  This then causes all kinds of syncing issues, MSM issues and general login issues that are typically based on a time stamp.  Continue Reading…

After reviewing a couple of FCC Filings this morning, it looks like Motorola is preparing a smart phone, most likely with Android on board, for both AT&T and T-Mobile.  The devices passed through the FCC about a week ago with the IDs IHDP56KZ1 and IHDP56KZ2.  KZ1 comes with quad band GSM and 3G support for T-Mobile, while the KZ2 comes with quad band GSM and 3G support for AT&T.  Both phones come with Wifi 802.11b/g and Bluetooth 2.1.  Little else could be found from the filings, but considering Motorola stated they’d have something like 20 Android phones coming through the pipe this year, it’s a good bet these things will be fully Droid worthy.  For reference, Motorola’s DROID has an FCC ID of IHDP56KC5 and the Cliq comes with ID IHDT56KV1.  There is another Motorola with the “56″ ID and a code name of WX404 supporting CDMA EVDO and Bluetooth via IHDT56LC1.

Well, it looks like all your waiting for the Motorola Devour will soon come to an end.  It looks as if the Devour will be offered through Best Buy for $150 $99 on a 2-Year contract, or $550 without contract.  I think I’ll throw out my opinion.  What?!?!  The DROID can be had for less than $100 right now.  Personally, the software, hardware and look of the DROID far surpasses that of the Devour.  I can really only find three things that would lure a consumer to the Devour rather than the DROID right now.  1) MOTOBLUR 2) DLNA Support 3)Battery Life.  Let’s compare the two phones… Continue Reading…

Motorola continues to expand it’s Android lineup with the introduction of the QUENCH, which shall be known as the CLIQ XT in the US.  The QUENCH is basically the CLIQ/DEXT without the physical qwerty keyboard, with a few additional features.  Basic specs include a 3.1″ high definition screen (which indicates greater than 480×320 resolution) and a 5mP camera with LED flash.  Two nice additional features include a dual mic setup with noise cancellation and an FM radio.  These phones will com loaded with Motorola’s own MOTOBLUR UI on top of Android 1.6 which includes a pinch-to-zoom setup as well and Swype preloaded just like the newer myTouch 3G phones.  Expect this to come to T-Mobile the 1Q of 2010 as the CLIQ XT and as the QUENCH to the rest of the world.  For more information Continue Reading…

The Android 2.1 testing that we first reported was in progress must have been much further along than previously thought.  Motorola has stated that the Android 2.1 update will begin this week via it’s official Facebook page.  This should include some multitouch Browser and Gallery apps for the DROID on top of the multitouch Maps app already updated.  They are stating that they will have information on other device upgrades later, in other words, the CLIQ won’t get it yet, but hold tight.

Hi all– we know you are frustrated with the lack of details regarding Android software upgrades and we sincerely apologize for not being able to share info sooner. We’re happy to relay the 2.1 upgrade to DROID will start to roll out this week, and we will have more information to share on other device upgrades later …

This is excellent news. We’ll see how much of the Android 2.1 build gets into the DROID.  Hopefully it will be more than previously reported was in test.  But, this should mean that all your Droid users get some 2.1 fun for now.  Now, for the rest of us…humph.

Looks like Motorola Droid owners can start salivating now.  Apparently, Android 2.1 version 1 is making its way through the testing department at Verizon making sure that ever nook and cranny is checked for bugs before a public release.  This version and Android 2.1 brings with it pinch-to-zoom Browsing, but no word on a multitouch Gallery as of yet.  According to a trusted source over at Engadget, while this does report as Android 2.1, it’s lacking just a bit of the Nexus One features.  Continue Reading…

AT&T's Android InvasionAs the resident AT&T user here, I think the news that AT&T is taking up the Android mantle is great. However, the press release gave us only 3 specific pieces of information. They said that among their 5 Android phones would be: 1) “Motorola’s unique form factor smartphone”, 2) Dell’s first smartphone, based on the Android platform 3) An exclusive HTC smartphone, based on the Android platform. Other than this, we exist in an information vacuum. This is to be expected, as the Nexus One has rightfully captured everyone’s attention. But if you look at what’s floating around in the pool of unclaimed Android handsets, we can get a sense of possibility. Let’s go through the 5 handsets, and see what we can confirm, and what we can speculate.

Motorola Backflip – CONFIRMED

The Motorola Backflip has been confirmed to be the “unique form factor” Motorola phone for AT&T. It was mentioned at CES, it was shown in pictures at AT&T’s presentation, and even Motorola’s site with AT&T 3G. You can read more about the Backflip here. Continue Reading…
