Another video of the HTC supersonic appears in the wild and this one shows a whole lot of nothing that we didn’t already know, however, it’s still proof this thing exists.  If it turns out anything like the rumors are pointing to, ie 4G Sprint device, then we are very excited over here at the Droids.  Otherwise, stop teasing us lucky few who have a Supersonic…yeah you know who you are.  Continue Reading…

The folks over at Android and Me are reporting that Cox Wireless is coming soon and that Cox is testing an Android phone from Kyocera.  Currently Cox Wireless utilizes Sprint’s 3G CDMA/EVDO network, which they are still planning on using for roaming service.  However with Long Term Evolution (LTE) 4G trials just being completed on the network (reported to reach peak speeds of 25Mbps down to 10Mbps), it is being rumored that their service will be launched in three test markets in possibly March.

This really hits home for me.  I have been wondering for some time why Cox hasn’t entered into the wireless cellphone market.  Reason being is that I am currently a Cox customer and would love to have all of my services lumped into one bill.  Depending on what kind of impact Cox has on the cell market, I, like most people, would much rather have one internet service (instead of having to pay for it at home and on my cell network), but that makes too much sense right?

I had also heard the rumor over two years ago about Cox entering the cell phone service.  I was also told that you would be able to watch recorded shows directly from your DVR, as well as set them up to record.  So, depending on your coverage, you could be driving to your vacation destination and watching your recorded shows right on your phone.  Or, with the right phone, maybe it could be hooked up via an HDMI cable and you could watch a movie on a TV in a hotel.

Sprint has actually been fairly good about posting updates as to when they think the Android 2.1 updates for the Hero and Moment would be available.  First they stated it would be in the first half of 2010, which did leave them a fairly wide window, then they narrowed it down a bit to early second quarter.  Now, there is a rumor from AndroidCentral that the dates we can expect are March 22nd for the Hero and March 24th for the Moment.  Continue Reading…

There have been a number of reports, rumors, speculations and general talk of Android 2.1 and older generation Android smart phones.  The question on everyone’s mind is, “Will my Android get version 2.1?”  I have received more than one email about the recent news concerning Android 2.1 and older phones.  I didn’t jump on the story, because there wasn’t a confirmation of the updates and I decided instead to give the readers a chance to see what is official and what is rumor/speculation.  With the introduction of Android 2.0 and then 2.1 a number of features were introduced that helped push the limit of the smart phone’s power and capabilities.  Some of those features, such as live wallpaper and the 3D gallery and app drawer/interface can be vary taxing on the phone’s processor and memory.  Can the current gen smart phones keep up?  Continue Reading…

The version of the Nexus One that will have Verizon Wireless’s and Sprint’s CDMA radios on board has passed through the FCC today.  It carries with it the FCC ID of PB99300, and the T-Mobile version of the Nexus One carries the ID of PB99100.  This is great news for anyone waiting for their chance at a Nexus One on either Verizon Wireless or Sprint.  While the only official announcement about the Nexus One includes support by Verizon Wireless, Sprint users should rest assured there is no reason you shouldn’t be able to use the CDMA N1 with Sprint.  I have even received word that the Nexus One is already in Sprint’s inventory system, at least as a place holder.  Continue Reading…

The Droids love rumors of the who’s-getting-what variety.  AT&T has already stated they will have five Android phones before the end of the year, and it’s looking like one of them might possibly be the HTC Desire.  The gang at BGR have posted about a rumor from “a source close to HTC” stating that the HTC Desire will be coming to AT&T along with the Nexus One.  And, according to the same source, Sprint will continue it’s Hero line with the HTC Legend, which will possibly face a name change to Hero 2 with a little cosmetic alteration as well.  Continue Reading…

PC World and Novarium have once again joined forces to provide an overview of the 3G capabilities in the US, with results using over 51,000 separate tests from 13 cities around the nation showing upload/download and reliability of the top four network providers; AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless.  The results look good for AT&T and smart phone users, as speeds (both up and down) were top on AT&T in most cities.  PC World has a very long article on the subject, they do go into details on how exactly they performed the tests, and they go on to show trends from the last test as well.  Continue Reading…

The HTC Supersonic, which had some secret spy shots recently, looks to be in testing with Sprint now.  Our source has stated that the OS is much less buggy than it was in January when first reported in the wild and it seems to be moving in the right direction.  It does indeed have Sense UI over Android 2.1, but right now it’s the same Sense UI is the same as that on the HTC Hero, nothing new yet.   However, expect the Supersonic to ship with the same Sense UI 2.1 that they have demoed on the Desire and Legend.  Also, the same source has stated that both the Supersonic and the Nexus One have showed up in Sprint’s system.  The specs are shaping up nicely as well. Sprint has made an announcement via Twitter stating the updates for the HTC Hero and Samsung Moment to Android 2.1 will be coming in early 2nd quarter of 2010, which probably means April 2010.  Since their tweet is limited to 140 characters, how convenient, they didn’t get into much detail other than stating they are working through options with HTC and Samsung.  I’m not too sure what options there could be, especially for the Samsung Moment which should be a completely vanilla Android build.  Maybe they mean, the options of how to upgrade; OTA, in store at Sprint, via online updates etc.  Sprint, if that’s the case, just let loose the update for those of us who can install it manually and then work out how to get it to the rest of the users as you can.  At least, that’s my opinion.

HTC has built a custom user interface (UI) to place on top of the stock Android OS that adds a number of additional features and experiences for the consumer.  The Sense UI isn’t unique to Android, they do the same thing with Windows mobile platforms.  Currently, the HTC Hero, both GSM and CDMA, as well as the Droid Eris have Sense UI running on top of Android 1.5, and HTC has given word that they are indeed working on updating those phones to Android 2.1 and they will still carry Sense UI.  It wasn’t known, until recently, what kind of changes to the Sense UI users could expect.  Well, there is a nice YouTube video showing some of the changes and it involves some multitouch and looks very promising.  Continue Reading…
